IIIT-D Celebrating 10th Anniversary
Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology was founded in 2008 with a single course of Bachelor in Technology in Computer Science Engineering. Since then, the institute has reached greater heights and had massive achievements. With a formidable faculty, talented and focused students, a dedicated administration, and a campus with all modern amenities, IIIT Delhi has, in just a meagre 10 years, managed to carve a niche for itself within the community of higher education in India. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this prestigious institute and it will be celebrated on 8th September 2018.
IIIT-Delhi started as a small unit within the campus of Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology(NSIT), Dwarka in 2008. With a small group of just 60 students, the first batch started with specialisation in Information Technology(later Computer Science). Since then, 5 other branches namely Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Computer Science and Design, Computer Science and Social Sciences, and Computer Science and Biology.
The new campus of the institute is located in Okhla Phase III, and was inaugurated in October 2012 by Sheila Dikshit, the former Chief Minister of Delhi. The construction for the phase II of the campus begun in 2015 and on 21st August 2018, the new phase was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Arvind Kejriwal in the presence of Shri Manish Sisodia Hon’ble Dy CM and Minister of Education, Delhi.
Since its inception, IIIT-Delhi has branched out into fields not completely explored by the engineering culture in India. It has been one of the first institutes in India to merge engineering with non-science fields. Multidisciplinary courses like Computer Science and Social Sciences, Computer Science and Design and Computer Science and Biology bridge the gap between Science and other subjects and offers a more wholesome and engaging education to its students.
In terms of response, the institute has bene accredited “A” grade by NAAC(National Assessment and Accreditation Council). The QS BRICS University rankings ranked IIIT-Delhi in the top 200 in their rankings for 2018. The institute is ranked at number 181-190 amongst the 9000 universities awarded, and is amongst the three institutions from Delhi to have gained a spot in this ranking.
Over the years, the institute has collaborated with a number of universities to enrich the student experience further. Just recently, Prof. Pankaj Jalote(Director, IIIT-Delhi) signs a MoU with the University of Buffalo, introducing a joint PhD between the two institutions. The aim of this venture is to develop joint International research in the field of computer science. Participating students will study and conduct research in the field of Computer Science and allied areas, spending almost equal time at both institutions, guided by supervisors from both.
In 2014, the institute tied up with Queensland University of Technology(QUT) for a collaborative PhD program. These programs also provide financial aid, in the form of scholarships, stipends or grants from the institutions.
As is evident from the intense research culture in the institute, they strongly support research environment and encourage students to explore the field of research as much as possible. The Overseas Research Fellowship(ORF) is designed to provide all PhD students at IIIT-Delhi with an exposure to international research environment. In this program the student undertakes research abroad under the supervision of a reputed scholar. Such initiatives give students immense exposure and an incentive to pursue research.
The Infosys Centre for Artificial Intelligence is yet another example of the kind of exposure students at IIIT-Delhi are provided. The centre has taken up and is working on several problems such as Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning and Deep Learning with applications to image recognition, Biometrics.
In a short span of just 10 years, IIIT-Delhi has created a name for itself in the field of research, engineering and has risen to great heights. To celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, a special two-day celebration is under planning. The first day will be a fun-filled carnival with games, food stalls and cultural performances. With events such as lemon-spoon race and an art display, this will surely be an evening of fun and leisure. The next day is planned to start with faculty versus students sports, such as cricket and badminton. The afternoon will have a series of seminars and workshops, with a special dinner at the end of the evening.
