This document contains operational rules and procedures relevant for undergraduate (UG) students of IIIT-Delhi outside those specified in the ordinances and regulations.

UG Office (Academics)

CSE/ ECE Credits to be Earned

"In the last four semesters, do at least 32 credits of CSE/ ECE courses for B.Tech. (CSE)/ B.Tech.(ECE) degree respectively. BTP/ Independent project/ Independent study/ Undergraduate Research cannot count for this requirement." This rule of the B.Tech.(CSE)/ B.Tech.(ECE) regulations applies to  B.Tech. 2011 and younger batches. 

Course Registration and Adding/ Dropping of a Course

Students register for the courses they intend to take in the next semester by registering on ERP at the end of the preceding semester. Course registrations may not be overlapping: that is courses may not overlap in any of their class timings (any exception with approval of UGC chair, only).

BTP, IP, IS, UR, online courses and domain study registration requires additional submission of the respective course registration form. Courses can be added/ dropped within the period given in the academic calendar).

At most 8 credits can be earned per semester by  IP, IS, UR altogether (other restrictions apply as per BTech regulations).

Missing Preconditions for Course Registration

Students who do not satisfy the preconditions of a course they want to register for will be required to write an application to the UGC chair before registration. In particular, this is required for BTech students in the first two years as senate approval is needed. Students are advised to submit their application at least two weeks before the semester starts.

BTP Registration

Students need to submit the filled-in BTP registration form signed by the supervisor not later than the last date of add/ drop as given in the academic calendar. The registration should also state the track of the BTP (research/ engineering/ entrepreneurship). However, the track may be decided or changed until the late drop date as given in the academic calendar. It is students' responsibility to inform UG office of the BTP track in time.

BTP Reports

The BTP report format of the institute has to be followed. The latex source file for the same is available here. The contents have to be structured as specified for each track below. Any deviation from this structure requires the approval of the UGC chair which needs to be obtained no later than the late course drop date specified in the academic calendar.

Report for a Research Project:

The report may be in a paper format or a technical report format (both within the institute's format) and must contain at least:

  • Motivation and research problem
  • Research approach and work done
  • Results obtained
Report for an Engineering Project:

The report must contain at least:

  • Problem for which the engineering solution is proposed and users of the proposed solution
  • Architecture, design, implementation, and validation of the solution
  • Interaction/ feedback/ inputs from end users on the solution
  • User manual / help
 Report for an Entrepreneurship Project:

The report must contain at least:

  • Context and opportunity
  • Proposed product/ service/… and value proposition
  • Design, architecture, implementation of the product/ service
  • Business plan

IP, IS, UR Course Registration

The respective registration forms need to be submitted for registration. All three courses require a CGPA of  at least 7.5. Course instructors may recommend exempting a student from the CGPA requirement by giving reason for this on the application form.

Online Course Registration

Students can register for courses offered as an online course in the web (eg edx or coursera courses), only, if these courses have been approved by the institute. The institute maintains a list of approved courses which is regularly updated. Students will have IIIT-D instructor who will assign a grade for this course.  The online course registration form has to be submitted to complete the registration from student's side.

BTech students can register for at most 8 credits of online courses in their entire program.

Domain Study Course Registration

Domain Study courses can be done in a summer term. To register for a Domain Study course, students have to find a IIITD instructor willing to supervise and to assign a grade (a letter grade out of the A – F spectrum). The domain study course registration form has to be filled in and submitted not later than the last date of add/ drop as given in the academic calendar for the summer term. At the end of the course, students will have to submit a report explaining their understanding of the domain/ community, identify some issues and propose some technology interventions/ systems that can help and how. They will have to give a presentation on the same.

Community Work/ Self Growth Credits

Self growth (SG) and community work (CW) activities can be completed any time during the four year degree period. However, the institute strongly recommends completing them within the first two years, preferably during the winter/ summer breaks.

Each of SG/ CW can be taken up as 1 credit or 2 credit activity. If taken as 1 credit activity, the student is expected to complete 35-40 hours in that activity. If taken as 2 credit activity, the student is expected to complete 70-80 hours in it.

For either of these activities, the student has to first submit a proposal, in the format specified in the application form, to the faculty in charge and get it approved before starting on with it. It is strongly suggested that the student discusses the activity with the faculty/ student/ administrative in charge before working on the proposal.

Once the proposal is submitted and is accepted, the student can continue working on it until he/ she has completed the required number of hours. After completion the student is expected to prepare a report in the format specified.

The report should be submitted within one year of acceptance of the proposal, failing which the student has to start afresh, from submitting the proposal. Together with the report a completion certificate from the organization where he/ she did the CW/ SG activity is to be submitted. The student also has to prepare a poster (or set of 8-10 slides) with specified format. There will be a poster session every semester (during the first 2-3 weeks) wherein the student has to  present the activity undertaken by him/ her.

All of report, poster and completion certificate are necessary for the student to be considered for evaluation. The report will be evaluated in the following semester. It is the responsibility of the student to start the activity and submit all the required documents in time (in particular, not to complete later than the end of the 7th semester so that sufficient time is given for the evaluation before graduation). 

The earned credit(s) will occur as a note in the final the transcript.

Missed Homeworks/ Tests/ Quizzes/ Exams

Students who missed a test/ quiz/ lab or the mid semester exams due to medical reasons, within a week  have to:

  1. Submit  their medical certificate to UG office (academics) signed by parent/ custodian
  2. Inform the instructor about the missed component.

The instructor decides how the student can make up for the missed component(s). For final exams a make-up exam has to be given as per BTech regulations.

Migration to Dual Degree Program

BTech students who are interested to migrate to Dual Degree Program may do up to 12 credits (according to the rules of MTech program) extra during their third  and fourth years, as for Honors, but the extra credits will get counted towards MTech. As such the concerned students should carefully plan the courses during they take in these two years. They are also advised to go through, well in advance, the detailed rules for migration to Dual Degree program).
