BTech(IT) program name changed to BTech(CSE)

February 27, 2012

The Academic Senate (which includes faculty members from IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore) and the Board of Governors of IIIT-Delhi has approved that the name of the current BTech program be changed from BTech in Information Technology (IT) to BTech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) with immediate effect. Inputs from various stakeholders, including current students, were taken before making this change.

The core mandate of IIIT-Delhi is to take forward the state of the art in IT through education and research. So far the primary foci were the computing and the software aspects of IT. The institute is now starting a B.Tech. program in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) to focus also on the communication and the hardware aspects of IT. With the introduction of this separate B.Tech. program, it is necessary to rename B.Tech. in IT to B.Tech. in CSE. The curriculum of the current B.Tech. program is already well aligned to a Computer Science and Engineering program, as all the core computing courses of a typical CSE program are included in the core of current program, and overall computing courses are more than that of a typical CSE program. There is no change in the curriculum and focus of the program, and this change is only a change in name. A scanned copy of the office order for affecting this change is available here.

Indo-US Workshop on Efficient Teaching at College/University Level

February 12, 2011

This 3 day Indo-US workshop was held here at IIIT-Delhi on Friday 10th, 11th and 12th with the primary objective of creating awareness in improving teaching and learning methods in university/college level.  The Indian educational system needs a revamping to keep up with the growing educational crisis. This workshop disseminated some of the best teaching practices that help students indulge in innovative learning, gathered from around the world. This event was jointly organized with University of Buffalo and sponsored by the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum.

The workshop observed some of the eminent philosophistsand educationists, including Dr. Jason of University of Buffalo, Dr. Lucinda of State University of New York and many others, converging and putting forth their thoughts into one. The 3-days covered a variety of topics including the effectiveness of lecture hours, the importance of course design, the necessity of having good assessment mechanisms and a lot more. There were two exclusive panel discussions that focussed on specific topics like MTech Certificate Program and initiation of new teaching centres in India. In a session conducted for students, the various hurdles that students face in their learning activities were addressed.

The second day of the workshop had a cultural event in the evening followed by a banquet dinner. In the third day all the interested delegates were taken for an all-Delhi tour. This workshop clubbed the two sides of the coin of teaching and learning and also brought together different ideologies of teaching from around the globe.

DISHA goes beta on DIMTS website

December 29, 2010

It started as a competition between two teams of undergraduate students trying to make the same software to help the people of Delhi with their commute using public transportation - DTC buses and Delhi Metro. The two teams combined their effort together to produce a prototype system that immediately caught the attention of both our honorable Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit as well as the organization Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) Limited. With more accurate and updated route information for DTC buses provided by DIMTS and further technology changes, the team of undergraduates put together a robust system that is now available for beta release by DIMTS on their website - http://www.dimts.in/.

The journey planning system rightly named Disha (meaning "direction") is the first such online system that integrates both the route information from multiple DTC routes as well as up to date information about the Delhi Metro together to provide the most optimal route across any destination in the city.

Key undergraduate members involved in the project are Aman Gupta, Ashish Gupta, Gaurav and Gaurav Saluja with help from Aman Sahni, Pratyush Tripathi, Rohit Kishore, Siddhartha Srivastava and Stuti Ajmani (all third year students). All through the guidance was provided by Kuldeep Yadav and the faculty members namely Pankaj Jalote, Vinayak Naik, Pushpendra Singh and Amarjeet Singh.
